It’s a Good Time to Die if You’re Merely Well-off

The estates of wealthy individuals who died in 2010 were not expected to pay any federal estate tax. However, the tax act that took effect in December of last year revived the federal estate tax. For the next two years, the IRS will collect a 35% tax on all estates worth more than $5 million. So while 2010 was good year to die if you were super wealthy, 2011 and 2012 might be good years to die if you’re merely “well-off” – at least from an estate tax perspective. That’s because, beginning January 1, 2013, estates over $1 million would subject to federal estate taxes which can be as high as 55%....
